September 2016     Woodturning for Scouts

Scouting in Taunton celebrated their centenary in 2016 with a weekend camp for some 700 members. At the request of Simon Lacey, of Wessex Woodturning Club,  members Nigel Maddocks, Dave Smith and Jeremy Briggs gave approximately 150 scouts and explorers a taster session in Woodturning at the local Huish Woods campsite on Saturday 24th September. Everyone went away happy withmushrooms and fungi which they had made.

April 2016       Wig stands for local hospitals

In April 2016 a member of the Somerset Woodturning Club asked if members could make display stands for wigs as the stand his wife had been given following treatment at the Beacon Oncology Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital Taunton was a less than appealing ugly looking plastic item. This idea was enthusiastically taken up by members of both Somerset and Wessex Woodturning Clubs and a large selection of designs were made in various timbers. So many were made that the idea has  been extended to Yeovil District Hospital where family members  of several Wessex Woodturners have also received treatment. In June 15 were presented to the Beacon Centre at Taunton. On 4th Augusta similar number were presented to the outreach hair loss clinic at South Petherton Hospital.
